The Preaching Matters Podcast

119 - Exegesis vs Eisegesis

Dr. Alan Carr

Send us a text

In today's episode, I discuss the difference between letting the Bible say what it says and making it say what the preacher wants it to. We will also discuss the differences between exegesis and eisegesis. This is not a trivial matter. It is akin to the differences between lightning and a lightning bug.

I want to make a strong case in favor of exegesis. When we practice exegesis, we "lead out" of the text, the truth placed there by the inspiration of God. When we practice eisegesis, we "lead into" the text ideas that form in our human minds.

Listen to the episode, and decide what you want to be: a preacher who tells you what God said in his Word, or one who reads into the Bible what he wants it to say. The choice seems cut and dried to me. Let me know what you think.
